Gold leaf is traditionally added along with feathers, fur, ribbons, gems and glitter. Gesso paint is used for the base and then more paints are applied to give it colouring and shading. Once dried it is removed from the mould and the excess edges of the papier-mache are cut off. The mould is then covered in papier-mache. This is then used to create a chalk mould.
